S-592 Lloyd F. Hatch Collection

Photo album (disassembled) donated by Mark Kulikowski containing 90 photographs related to Lloyd F. Hatch’s WWI era service in the New York Naval Militia and as a crew member of USS Wacondah (SP-238). The album also contains a number of photos and documents concerning Hatch’s marriage to Ida Ayers and other elements of his private life. Many of the photos were likely taken by Hatch, as they include many photos of fellow crewmembers and general activities aboard ship (including coaling), as well as at the New York Naval Militia facility. The number of submarine photos in the album indicates that she may have supported submarine operations out of the New London Submarine Base at Groton, CT. The following submarines are included: G-4, G-2, L-8, G-3, G-1,and E-2. The majority of the images have been cataloged at the item level into the “NH” series. The 30-page album was purchased and donated by Mark Kulikowski.

Hatch appears to have begun his services with the New York Naval Militia in 1917 and was subsequently assigned to the patrol vessel (converted yacht) Wacondah. That ship spent her entire Navy career operating in the vicinity of New York Harbor and Long Island Sound.
