Title: Francis Holmes Hallett Photo Collection
Description: Collection of 370 photos and postcards collected during the naval service of Francis Holmes Hallett, circa 1918-1921, aboard USS Oklahoma (BB-37). The majority of the collection consists of commercial color postcards with little to no US Navy relevance, other than they may have been obtained during Hallett’s visits to these locations while in the service aboard USS Oklahoma. See below for a listing of locations. The remainder of the collection are photographs taken aboard and in association with USS Oklahoma (BB-37), though they do not indicate any locations while at sea. The collection also includes a Log Book containing Hallett’s entries for a period covering January-June 1919. See below for photographic subject matter.

  • Views of Oklahoma’s racing cuter and whaleboat in action, as well as her kite balloon.

  • Views of the ship in a storm and in drydock, as well of views of her amidships superstructure from onboard, fore and aft.

  • Views of sailors including five chiefs, Francis H. Hallett, Kenneth L. Post, and “Sparks” the ship’s mascot.

  • Views of recreation aboard the USS Oklahoma including a theater production (with the O.K. Follies Minstrel Show), sailors sleeping in a hammock, swimming alongside the ship, taking on stores, scrubbing, boxing and deck games (spar fight, wheelbarrow race, and chariot race).

  • Other ships visible: French SS Monge, USS Imperator, USS Lamberton (DD-119), USS George Washington, and French SC # C-88.
