Collection Guide:
The album begins with a brief narrative “log” which covers the period from early November to later December 1918, while USS Florida was at Rosyth, Scotland, at sea, and at New York City. It includes comments on the owner’s activities, events on board ship and recreation activities (mainly boxing).
The subject of the images consists of views onboard ship; officers and crewmembers; general onboard activities; divisions (including cooks and bakers, hospital corpsmen, gunners; gun crew; marine detachment, and radiomen); coaling; boxing matches; ship’s band; and baseball team
Activities ashore of the USS Florida crewmen consist of sporting events (probably at Rosyth, Scotland), including track and field, boxing, and awards presentations; football games between USS Florida and USS Texas and USS Arkansas; and sailors and marines drilling ashore.
Additional miscellaneous imagery includes a boxing machine at Guantanamo, Cuba; destroyers steaming in formation off Cuba; and scenes at Vera Cruz, Mexico. Also included are commercial postcards showing scenes of London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland.
