Collection photo # 2015.12.01 - Part of the Third Fleet in Tokyo Bay, Japan, September 1945
Mark Devine Collection – two bound photo albums of images related to the naval service of Earl Kalina, engineer.
Album #1: US Naval fleet in Tokyo, Japan and return to US, September-December 1945. The following ships are listed as being in Tokyo Bay or in Yokosuka Naval Base: USS Shadwell (LSD-15), USS Roche, USS Shangri La, USS Benevolence, as well as the fleet onboard an LSM bound for liberty in Yokohama & Yokosuka. Also included are images of passengers on USS Tulagi (CVE 72) returning from overseas duty arriving into San Francisco Bay. Also noted are various buildings and facilities at Yokosuka Air Base as wells as Japanese ships & submarines (some of which show bomb damage). Photos of the surrounding city of Yokosuka include stores, hospital, post office, homes, and general buildings, some of which show bomb damage. Several images show Japanese POWs assisting US sailors in the disposal of ammunition over the side of an LCM into Tokyo Bay.
Album #2: Barracks and facilities of the Waimanalo Amphibious Training Base, Oahu, Hawaii, May –July 1945. Specific scenes and subjects include: buildings, workshops, LCVP & LCM boats on slab (dry dock) as well as being hauled on a cherry picker, personnel (on base and off), sporting activities, bands and music. General cities scenes of Oahu are included with sailors from the base on liberty.
