Description: 37 photographs of the raising of the submarine USS S-51 (SS-162) in 1926, from Bruce Carpenter who served on USS Vestal (AR-4), donated by brother John Carpenter. Views of pontoons raising submarine, towing submarine to New York Navy Yard, views in drydock including close-ups of portions of submarine, and views of divers. Also seen are Secretary of the Navy Curtis Wilbur, USS Iuka (AT-37), and USS Chewink (AM-39). Two photos appear to have been removed to the NH collection, including NH 108496.
