Collection of approximately 176 photographs (loose and albums) related to the naval career of CAPT. Hays R. Browning. Browning completed flight training in 1928 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the USNR and was designated as a Naval Aviator in September 1929. A full biography is available in the collection. Specific subject matter consists of aviation training and reserve service, circa 1928-1930; including: 1920s aircraft – Martin SC-1, F5L in flight, and a Vought UO-1 being launched from a catapult; aerial view of NAS Pensacola, FL circa 1920s; group photo of aviators (including Browning); and six PBY flying boats over the Golden Gate Bridge, 1937. Also included are images related to Browning’s post WWII service, including dedication of Shea Field at NAS Sqantum, MA, 1946; Browning as XO at NAS Squantum; and an office visit with Captain Frederick W. Priestman.

Specific subjects included are: portraits of Browning, attendance of ceremonies; inspections; visits and tours by congressmen of NAS Niagara Falls; and a civilian orientation cruise to Pensacola, FL from NAS Niagara Falls area.

77 photographs concerning CDR Browning’s service as Executive Officer of USS Attu (CVE-102) from 1944-1945. Specific subject matter consists of commissioning ceremonies aboard USS Attu at Astoria, OR; crew of the ship (group photos of all divisions); planes damaged by a 5 June 1945 typhoon aboard the ship’s flight deck (aircraft include: F6F, FM-2, TBM, F4U-1, and SB2C-4E); underway replenishment including “high-lined” officers on the hangar deck; various shipboard scenes and activities (inspections, Crossing the Line activities, boxing matches, ship’s bridge, and aircraft taking off from the ship); aerial images of Eniwetok Island, with USS Attu (CVE-102) and USS SItkoh Bay (CVE-86) present in mid-August 1945. Eniwetok Island airfield is seen.

44 photographs of places and aircraft during WWII, including Pacific Island locations (Espiritu Santo Harbor, New Hebrides, July-December 1943 showing shipping & docks; Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands 1942-1944; Finschaven area in New Guinea; camp area at Lorungau, Manus Island 1944 showing tents and shipping offshore; Eniwetok Island airfield April-May 1944, showing buildings and planes; camp scenes at Ulithi Atoll 1944; aerials of Saipan and Tinian Islands showing Marpi Airfield; and views of Guam, including Agana from the air) as well as in the US (Astoria, OR; aerial of Bremerton, WA; aerial of San Francisco, CA; and Los Angeles shipbuilding and drydock).
