Title: Bureau of Supplies and Accounts (BuSandA) Photo Collection
Description: Four volume (including 430 photographs) of a study entitled “Supplying the Fleet: A Pictorial Study”, providing a detailed description of the activities of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts (BuSandA) during WWII (written by LT Paul W. Bruske). The report was prepared in 1944 and were part of the collections of ADM William B. Young, BuSandA Chief in WWII. All four volumes describe in words and photos the activities of BuSandA headquarters, divisions, branches and sections. Photos and text represent the situation in the mid-to-late 1944. They provide a detailed view of bureau function in Washington, DC, bureau interface with other wartime government production and resource allocation agencies, and a limited view of BuSandA offices elsewhere in the US and the fleet. The negatives for the images in the study are likely held at the National Archives.

  • typical office scenes in WWII “temporary” buildings in Washington, DC featuring Supply Corps officers and enlisted people (including WAVES).

  • Civil Service employees of the Bureau

  • Contemporary offices and furniture

  • Contemporary Navy uniforms, including: male and female officer and enlisted service dress “Blues”, dress khaki and “Greys” and female “seersucker” summer uniform.

- “Main Navy” and “Munitions” buildings complex, and nearby buildings of I, J, & K, which housed much of BuSandA during the war.

- methods and procedures for staff functions, such as inventory control, punch cards, tabulating machines, etc.
-logistics and support for the palletizing of loads handled by forklift trucks and stowage on board ship.
