S-100 - S-105 Admiral Arleigh Burke Collection

137 scrapbooks, approximately 3,200 loose photos, and other paper materials, from the naval career and personal life of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Arleigh Burke. The vast preponderance of material shows official visits and events during Burke’s tenure as CNO, and was donated to the Naval History and Heritage Command during the mid-1970s. For his years as CNO, there are yearly summary albums featuring reproductions of significant photos from other albums taken that year, along with reproductions of relevant articles and documents. Many of the original photos in these yearly compilations can be found in the S-105 series. There is good coverage of his early career during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as material from his service during World War II. There is significant material on his post-Navy life, including a series of albums produced by Texaco during Burke’s tenure serving on the Texaco Board of Directors in the 1960s. Portions of Burke’s personal collection were originally held by the Naval Historical Foundation, and transferred to NHHC in 2008. Those NHF collections have been incorporated into the overall Burke collection as S-105-BB and and S-105-CC. Many of the photos in the NHF portion of the collection are duplicates of imagery found in bound photo albums in the earlier portions of the collection. Some photos have been assigned NH numbers or have been removed and assigned to the NH collection.
