Title: William Browning Photo Collection
Description: Photo album related to the WWI naval service of William Reed Browning aboard USS Pueblo (ACR-7). The collection begins with images of Browning at boot camp in Portsmouth, NH and then aboard USS Pueblo, with visits to New York, Rio, Paris, Norfolk, and the battle front of Soissons, France. The images follow the history of the USS Pueblo during 1918 when she returned to Norfolk, Virginia on 18 January 1918, and from 5 February – 16 October, and made seven voyages to escort convoys carrying men and supplies to England. After carrying the Brazilian ambassador to the United States to Rio de Janeiro, she returned to transatlantic duty, making six voyages between Hoboken and Brest, France, to bring home veterans of the American Expeditionary Force. Additional ships seen in the collection include SS Leviathan, USS Von Steuben (ID-3017), and USS Minnesota (BB-22). Please see below for specific subject matter.

Boot camp at Portsmouth, NH photos consist of tent encampments and groups of sailors and friends.
USS Pueblo photos consist of general onboard ship scenes, coaling the ship, ship’s band, viewing of ship convoys, submarine lookouts, Crossing the Line ceremonies, and the ship crowded with personnel arriving into New York.
Shore scenes include the docks and visiting the city in New York, Norfolk Navy Yard, groups of sailors on liberty in Paris (sightseeing photos at historic places) as well as the battlefields at the frontlines in Soissons (showing destruction of villages and land).
