Description: Three photo albums and numerous loose prints from the collection of RADM Ammen Farenholt mainly relating to naval base hospitals and dispensaries circa 1930-1935, plus an album of the launching of the USS Farenholt (DD-491). RADM Farenholt was appointed Inspector of the Medical Department activities of the West Coast August 24, 1931 and retired January 1, 1936. Also included are loose prints related to the time period of RADM Ammen Farenholt’s father, Admiral Oscar Farenholt.

Album #1 (and loose folder) consists of naval hospitals from the following locations: Corpus Christi; TX; Long Beach, CA; Corona, CA; San Diego, CA; Mare Island, CA; Seattle, WA; Puget Sound, WA; Astoria, OR; Farragut, ID; Chelsea, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Newport, RI; Brooklyn, NY; Parris Island, SC; League Island, PA; Washington, DC; Bethesda, MD; Annapolis, MD; Quantico, VA; Norfolk, VA; Portsmouth, VA; Charleston, SC; Jacksonville, FL; Key West, FL; San Juan, PR; Pensacola, FL; Houston, TX; Oceanside, CA; Canacoa, PI; and Coco Solo, Panama. Most imagery from this album is of exterior buildings and or sun dials (in the 1920s and 30s, Farenholt commissioned other sun dials for Navy hospitals).

 

Album #2 (and loose folder) consists of naval hospitals and dispensaries from the following locations: Boston, MA; Newport, RI; Quonset, RI; New London; Lakehurst, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Naval Academy, MD; Quantico, VA; Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; Parris Island, SC; Corpus Christie, TX; San Diego, CA; Hawthorne, NV; Moffett Field, CA; Alameda, CA; Seattle, WA; Sitka, AK; Great Lakes, IL; Panama Canal Zone; Camp Peary, VA; Yokosuka, Japan; Memphis, TN; Guantanamo, Cuba; San Juan, PR; and Monterey, CA. Most imagery from this album is of exterior buildings and or signage noting the facility.

 

Album #3 consists of photos and articles related to the launching of the USS Farenholt (DD-491) in 1941.

 

File Folder #1 contains photos of the officers of USS Monoacy (including Admiral Oscar Farenholt), portraits of Admiral Oscar Farenholt, USS Marretta, USS Mercy, USS Dale, USS Albany, USS Maryland, USS Washington, & USS Terror. Also included are naval hospital photos at: Great Lakes, IL; Mare Island, CA; San Diego, CA (the dental wing), and at Guam.

 

File folder #2 contains photos of naval hospitals, including: Guam; Washington, DC; Trinidad; Camp Pendleton, CA, Pearl Harbor, HI; Naval Academy, MD; and Mare Island, CA. Admiral Farenholt family photos are included.

 

File folder #3 contains photos of naval hospitals, including: Guam (staff); Great Lakes, IL; San Diego, CA & Camp Peary, VA. Also included are 1894 & 1895 photos of Adm. Ammen Farenholt and USS Baltimore and USS Ammen.
