Collection photo # 2017.36.01 - portrait of George Arnold, bugle master third class
Group of photo albums, loose images, books (transferred to library) and newspaper clippings from the collection of George Arnold, bugle master third class, aboard USS Mount Olympus (AGC-8) during its service as part of Operation High Jump, 1947. Photos in the album are numbered sequentially and include several route maps. The images include USS Mount Olympus’ journey through the Panama Canal, Crossing the Line Ceremonies, and voyage to Antarctica, including crew photos, other ships including: USS Merrick (AKA-97), USS Barnstable (APA-93) and USS Sennet (SS-408). Subject matter consists of ice breaking by ships, dog’s sledding materials, base camp site, transportation vehicles, aircraft support, mess hall, and various base interior rooms and spaces. It is unknown if Arnold took the images that make up the album, but the loose imagery may have been shot by him.
