This painting serves to depict the introduction of women to sea duty aboard ships in the US Navy.  Before this only nurses had served on ships at sea. The first women to come aboard USS Sanctuary (AH-17) where Line Offer LTJG Ann E Kerr and the first enlisted PN3 Peggy Sue Griffith.  They were joined by 53 enlisted women and 14 female officers in a pilot program to integrate women for ship duty.
