President James Madison
James Madison (1751-1836) was a principal author of the United States Constitution. During the Jefferson administration, Madison served as Secretary of State, overseeing the negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase and imposing the ruinous Embargo Act. Towards the end of Jefferson’s term as President in 1808, the Democratic-Republican Party selected him as their candidate to replace him.
