The second major milestone of a ship’s life after its launching is its commissioning.  On that day the ship, which has passed its sea trails, receives it first commander and crew and it put into full service as a member of the active fleet.  USS New York City (SSN-696) was commissioned on 3 March 1979 and served until 30 April 1997.
