A primary fighting ship at the beginning of the 20th century, battleship usefulness was at its zenith in World War II.  Today, may feel that the day of the battleship is over, with the carrier aircraft taking over the functions of inland bombardment and shore invasion support.  The Navy finally decommissioned its last active battleship, U.S.S. Missouri (BB-63) in 1998.
