WASHINGTON NAVY YARD – Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) presented the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Naval History Essay contest winners yesterday, Sept. 23.

Winners in the Professional Historian Category:

1st Place: Dr. Corbin Williamson - Air War College

2nd Place: Andrew Blackley - Independent scholar

Winners in the Rising Historian Category:

1st Place: Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey E. Vandenengel - USS John Warner (SSN 785)

2nd Place: Lt. j.g. Joseph W. Sims - USS Antietam (CC 54)

3rd Place: Lt. Jack W. Tribolet - Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 26

CNO, Adm. Mike Gilday, presented awards to the essay contest winners at the biennial McMullen Naval History Symposium, held at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

“Entries needed to research and detail historical apparels on sea power, relate them to maintaining maritime superiority and provide a lesson that can be applied today,” said Gilday. “Our award winners did just that. Terrific work by our first place winners, and to all 78 individuals who contributed to the 5th annual essay contest.”

The contest asked participants to present their insights on U.S. maritime services and how they can maintain superiority. Submissions were judged on readability, thoroughness of research, quality of insights and uniqueness of ideas presented.

“We saw many excellent submissions this year,” said NHHC Director Samuel J. Cox, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral. “The winners demonstrated a thorough understanding of naval history and were able to use historical examples to create thought-provoking insights into our current maritime climate.”

The contest was coordinated by NHHC, United States Naval Institute, United States Naval Academy, Naval War College and Naval Postgraduate School.

The winning authors received cash prizes and an artifact from USS Constitution. First place winners received $5,000 and will have their essays published in U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and Naval History Magazine. All winners will have their essays published on the NHHC website.

NHHC, located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage. It provides the knowledge foundation for the Navy by maintaining historically relevant resources and products that reflect the Navy's unique and enduring contributions through our nation's history and supports the fleet by assisting with and delivering professional research, analysis, and interpretive services. NHHC is composed of many activities, including the Navy Department Library, the Navy Operational Archives, the Navy art and artifact collections, underwater archeology, Navy histories, 10 museums, USS Constitution repair facility, and the historic ship Nautilus.
