At NHHC's booth, visitors can read about the command and its nine museums, see a model of the gunboat USS Bancroft, originally built in 1892, and learn of its history, sail vicariously through cruise books from USS Vandegrift (FFG 48), USS Elrod (FFG 55), and USS Ingraham (FFG 61), and learn about the latest news in naval archaeology.

While that last part may seem a little strange -- archaeological news -- NHHC’s Underwater Archaeology Branch has been busy this past year. Swing by and see what went into the conservation process for the Howell torpedo (once lost off the coast of California more than a century ago but recovered in 2013 and now fully conserved), a select few artifacts from the World War II cruiser USS Houston (CA 30), or watch a video detailing some of what UAB couldn’t bring along.

On Wednesday Jan. 13, NHHC’s Dr. John Sherwood, author of “War in the Shallows,” will speak from 5:30 - 7 p.m. The talk, called ‘Market Time Operations - Vietnam War’, will also feature retired Navy Capt. Art Ismay, first commanding officer of Coastal Boat Squadron One; Rev. Stephen Umler, who earned the Silver Star during Market Time as the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Point League (WPB 82304); and Retired Navy Vice Adm. David Robinson, who earned the Navy Cross while serving as Commanding Officer of the Patrol Gunboat, USS Canon (PG 90) in Vietnam. Tickets are required.  To download a free copy of Sherwood’s book, visit the NHHC web site at http://go.usa.gov/cnK8w
