Believed to be caused by a German mine or torpedo, the armored cruiser sank in 28 minutes with the loss of six lives. The ceremony was organized by the Naval History and Heritage Command, which is responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. Naval history and heritage.
