Courtenay P. was constructed in 1916 at Morris Heights, N.J., by the Charles L. Seabury Co and Gas Engine & Power Co., and acquired by the Navy on 5 July 1917. Given the identification number S.P. 899, Courtenay P. was commissioned on 30 August 1917 and served in the Third Naval District, her name being cancelled to most likely avoid confusion with Courtney (S.P. 375) , which was in commissioned service at the same time, Courtenay P. becomiong simply S.P. 899 in July 1918.
Ultimately, S.P. 899 was returned to her owner on 12 December 1918, a month after the Armistice ended the Great War, and she was stricken from the Navy Register the same day.
