Caption: Mark I, 14-inch naval railway battery, built in 1918 by the Bureau of Ordnance and used in France during World War I. Here it is seen, in a photograph taken in December 1969, on display at the Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dahlgren, Virginia, after being restored. This example lacks the gun car shields that protected the gun and crew from injury by shell splinters and small arms fire.
