Description: Demonstrates lookout technique on the bridge of a ship of the South Atlantic Patrol, May 1942. He was promoted from Seaman Second Class on the orders of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, USN, for spotting a surfaced U-Boat at almost 5,000 yards due to a careless German's flashlight. Incident took place on 9 May at about 2100 hours. Ship may be USS Jouett.
