Title: Preliminary Design Plan for Gunboat # 22 ... November 30, 1917 Note:
Description: Photo #: S-584-123 Preliminary Design Plan for Gunboat # 22 ... November 30, 1917 Preliminary design plan for Gunboat # 22, as planned for funding in Fiscal Year 1917. The design team was directed to follow the design of Gunboat # 21, Asheville (see Photo # S-584-092), modified to provide an increased armament (three 5-inch guns compared to three 4-inch) and ammunition as well as increased speed (16 compared to 12 knots). The designers determined that a considerable increase in length and displacement was needed to satisfy these goals, ultimately deemed unacceptable. Accordingly, this ship, named Tulsa and funded in Fiscal Year 1918, was built to the same, smaller design as Asheville. This plan provides three 5-inch guns, reciprocating steam machinery, and a speed of 16 knots in a ship 280 feet long on the water line, 40 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 2,100 tons. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
