Description: Photo #: S-584-111 Proposed 5750 ton Scout ... January 5, 1917 Preliminary design plan (Scheme I) prepared by the Bureau of Construction & Repair during consideration of a design for a cruiser to be included in the Fiscal Year 1918 program. The Bureau took the initiative to study four such designs, seeking to reduce size below that of the 1917 cruiser design (Preliminary Design No.160, see Photo # S-584-093). Scheme I was the smallest design and was predicated on high efficiency in eliminating non-essential weights. The P.D. 160 design was sustained in Fiscal Year 1918 and 1919 cruisers rather than shifting to a smaller ship. This plan provides for a ship carrying two 8-inch and four 5-inch guns, turbine machinery and a speed of 33.7 knots in a ship 500 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 45 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 5,750 tons.
