The USS PRESIDENT and the HMS ENDYMION, January 1815
Title: The USS PRESIDENT and the HMS ENDYMION, January 1815
Caption: On 15 January 1815, a British squadron, the 56-gun frigate HMS MAJESTIC, Captain John Hayes, the 40-gun frigate HMS ENDYMION, Captain Henry Hope, the 38-gun frigate HMS POMONE, Captain John Lumley, and the 36-gun frigate HMS TENEDOS, Captain Hyde Parker, was cruising off Sandy Hook when, at 4am, the United States frigate USS PRESIDENT, Commodore Stephen Decatur, passed them about 2 miles to the northward. At noon, the wind fell light and ENDYMION, out sailing MAJESTIC, gained upon PRESIDENT who cut away anchors, started water, boats, spars, etc. and wet her sails and altered her course to the southward. At 5:30pm, the two frigates came to close action in a parallel line of sailing. At 6:40pm, PRESIDENT luffed across ENDYMION's bow and ceased firing. About 7:30pm, it was resumed which brought down ENDYMION's studdingsail. At 7:40pm, PRESIDENT kept away, firing only at intervals and, at 8pm, ceased. The British crew commenced bending new sails and PRESIDENT continued her course under a heavy press of canvas. At 11:15pm POMONE, ranging up on her larboard quarter, fired her starboard broadside. PRESIDENT rounded to and hailed that she surrendered. TENEDOS shortly arrived and sent a boat to take possession. ENDYMION suffered 11 killed and 14 wounded while PRESIDENT lost 3 lieutenants and 32 men killed, her commander, master, 2 midshipmen and 66 men wounded.
