American Privateer POLLY Escapes from Ship HMS INDIAN, July 1812
Title: American Privateer POLLY Escapes from Ship HMS INDIAN, July 1812
Caption: On 14 July 1812, the privateers DOLPHIN (?), Captain Endicott, and POLLY, Captain Handy, fell in with a ship and a brig which they supposed to be merchantmen. On arriving almost within gunshot, they saw she was a sloop of war, the HMS INDIAN, 22 guns. Thereat, they fled, the INDIAN under stunsails in pursuit of POLLY. Eventually, the breeze failed and the INDIAN manned her launch, armed with a four-pounder, and other boats, and with three cheers made a brave dash at POLLY. To this, POLLY replied with musketry and her broadside guns loaded with langridge. The launch was compelled to strike her colors but was not captured as the INDIAN was slowly drifting within range and the POLLY had to take to her sweeps to escape.
