Caption: In the foreground, the USS HIGBEE (DD-806) renders aid to the U French tanker ARSIONE, 2 September 1965. The tanker (11,000 ton) ran aground on Scarborough Shoals, 140 miles northwest of Manila, Republic of the Philippines. ARSIONE's master ordered his ship abandoned when she broached on the shoals and began sinking. HIGBEE took aboard 30 survivors, 14 by helicopter and 16 by small boat. HIGBEE is commanded by Commander Floyd Searl of Rock Castle, Washington. The helicopter was piloted by Lieutenant Meryl Belto of San Antonio, Texas, and Lieutenant Julian Hammond of Meridan, Mississippi.
