Caption: Boilerman First Class I. Hinderleter, Jr. cuts the commissioning cake for the Guided Missile Frigate USS GRIDLEY (DLG-21) as Captain Robert L. Thorson (left), Commanding Officer of the GRIDLEY, and Rear Admiral John Nevin Shaffer, Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, look on. Hinderleter is the only remaining crew member from the GRIDLEY's commissioning on 25 May 1963. The GRIDLEY was decommissioned in 1968 to undergo extensive anti-air-warfare modernization. At Bath, Maine, 17 January 1970. Note the medals worn by Admiral Shaffer.
