Charleston Navy Yard
Title: Charleston Navy Yard
Caption: Preparing ships for war in 1941. The large ship on the left is probably USS LEONARD WOOD (AP-25), converting from an Army transport. The freighter is probably USS HAMUL (AK-20), converting from a merchantman. The two destroyers at the piers are probably USS SWANSON and USS INGRAHAM (DD-443 and DD-444) fitting out. The single-stack destroyers (two pier side and one in dry dock) are probably USS MAYRANT, USS TRIPPE, and USS RHIND (DD-402, DD-403, and DD-404) in from neutrality patrol. The ships building on the left pair of ways are probably USS CORRY and USS HOBSON (DD-463 and DD-464). Those on the right pair of ways are probably USS BEATTY and USS TILLMAN (DD-460 and DD-461). Four of the ships afloat were completed between May and July 1941. The photo, taken at 1000 feet, was dated 24 July 1941 and was probably taken slightly earlier.
