Caption: View taken after the overwater flight from San Francisco to Hawaii in September 1925, flown by Commander John Rodgers, USN, Naval Aviator #2. Note stripped lower wing-in that condition because the crew used the fabric from the lower wing for a sail, as they had been forced down 559 miles short of their goal and had to sail the rest of the way.
