Navy poster, "Submarines"
Title: Navy poster, "Submarines"
Caption: Navy poster, "Submarines," features photos and descriptions of various U.S. Navy submarines. "Exemplifying the development of the submarine is the U.S.S. SALMON (above), a fleet submarine of the cruiser type. Typical of the modern submarine, it is a wide departure from the earlier boats. Completed in 1938, it displaces 1450 tons on the surface, is 298 feet long and 26.0 feet in width. While submerged, observations can be made through its periscope from a depth as great as fifty feet and it can, for prolonged periods, operate at a depth of more than 200 feet. Only officers and men who volunteer and who possess the requisite physical requirements, are accepted for duty on board submarines, provided they qualify after an intensive course of instruction at the Submarine School." Poster issued January 1940, size 14" x 17". NRB-26993-1-23-40-9500.
