Caption: Portrait photo. Rear Admiral Renken entered the Naval Academy in 1927 and graduated in 1931. He served aboard USS GREER (DD-45) until 1933, when he reported aboard USS WEST VIRGINIA (BB-48). In July 1937, he reported to USS BRIDGE (AF-1). After shore assignments he reported to USS HAMBLETON (DD-455) as Executive Officer in December 1941. From December 1942 to September 1944 he commanded HAMBLETON. From 1944 to 1949 he held various staff duties. In July 1949 he commanded Destroyer Division 102 aboard USS BENNER (DD-807) until October 1950. He again held various shore assignments until November 1955 when he commanded USS MOUNT McKINLEY (AGC-7) and then USS NORTHAMPTON (CLC-1) in October 1956. Since 1956 he held various shore staff assignments and on 30 June 1965 he became Commander, Service Force, Atlantic Fleet. In July 1967 he became Commandant of the Ninth Naval District.
