Caption: Pulitizer prize winning Historian Dr. Allen Nevins arrives on the sixth fleet heavy cruiser Des Moines (CA-134) by helicopter, December 1957. The Columbia University Professor of American History had a 13-day visit with the sixth fleet as part of his research for a diplomatic history of the force. He had just been flown from the aircraft carrier independence (CVA-62) where he had landed after a flight from Naples. He left the fleet at Istanbul.
