Title: Maury Matthew F.
Caption: Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury, Confederate State Navy. By photo eng. Co., NY. Born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia 14 January 1806. He was appointed a midshipman U.S. Navy, 1 February 1825 passed 4 June 1831. Lieutenant 10 June 1836, commander 14 September 1855, Dismissed 26 April 1861 as a midshipman he circumnavigated the globe in USS Vincennes. In 1842 he was appointed superintendent of "Depot of Chart and Instruments" and did much research on winds, currents and Geography. From 1862 to 1865 he was a Confederate agent in Britain. In 1868 he became professor of Meteorology at Virginia Military institute. Died Lexington, Virginia 1 February 1873.
