Caption: Stipple engraving by R. Pollard after N. Pocock. Published in the "Naval Chronicle," July 1799, by Bunney and Gold, London. This battle between De Grasse's fleet and Hood's squadron, on 9 April 1782, brought on the major battle of 12 April. The scene is taken from the northwest and shows seven British ships (right) engaged with another (the ROYAL OAK) coming up. A French battleship is in the foreground, about to tack about and re-engage. Inshore, the French convoy is escaping toward Guadeloupe.
