Caption: Engraving by Burt and published in "Sea and Sailor," copyright 1851. Born 9 May 1797, Rutland County, Virginia. Appointed chaplain in U.S. Navy, May 1830. Served as Historiographer, Chaplain South Sea Surveying and Exploring Squadron, 1837; Chaplain, Naval Station Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1838. Established "The Californian," the first California newspaper, in 1846; built the first school house in California; Was responsible for public announcement in the east of discovery of gold in Sacramento Valley (in a letter to the Philadelphia North American and Gazette); and authored several books. He died 22 January 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
