Insignia: USS JAMES K. POLK (SSBN-645)
Title: Insignia: USS JAMES K. POLK (SSBN-645)
Caption: This insignia was adopted in 1965. The sunburst and eagle symbolize the "spread eagle platform" on which James K. Polk ran for and was elected to the presidency in 1844. The four stars represent the four major land areas (Texas, California, New Mexico, and Oregon Territories) that were acquired during Polk's term of office. The blue field stands for the unity of purpose that Polk strived for among the several states and territories. This blue field, taken with the gold edging, also represents the foundation of the U.S. Naval Academy during Polk's Administration.
