Insignia: USS THOMAS EDISON (SSBN-610)
Title: Insignia: USS THOMAS EDISON (SSBN-610)
Caption: This insignia was adopted by the USS THOMAS EDISON's first crew in 1961. It features the symbols of the Polaris team, the SSBN submarine and the Polaris missile, along with the figure of Edison's first electric light bulb. The latter symbol represents the great inventor's life and works and lends support to the Latin motto, which is translated "Power to repel the darkness." This motto is derived from a phrase used by President Hoover in a 1929 speech honoring Thomas A. Edison.
