NH 64756-KN Insignia: USS GEORGE C. MARSHALL (SSBN-654)

Insignia: USS GEORGE C. MARSHALL (SSBN-654)
Title: Insignia: USS GEORGE C. MARSHALL (SSBN-654)
Caption: This insignia, devised by the Army Institute of Heraldry, was adopted in 1965. Its motto is derived from a speech made by General Marshall in 1948, in which he stated, concerning the Soviet-American confrontation: "It would be a tragic error to mistake patience for weakness." The wavy blue and gold field alludes to the oceans and to the Navy. The red band with its five stars refers to the George C. Marshall family coat of arms. That contains a red band with fusils, which have, in this insignia, been replaced with the five stars of a general of the Army. The flaming trident issuing from the waves alludes to the SSBN class vessel, its missile armament, and its capability of firing its missiles from beneath the seas.
