Insignia: USS GUAM (LPH-9)
Title: Insignia: USS GUAM (LPH-9)
Caption: This insignia, adopted in 1964, is intended to symbolize three main areas of significance: the LPH mission; the World War II Battle of Guam and other Guam historical events; and the close Navy-Marine Corps tactical relationship. The broken blue chevron in the shield symbolizes amphibious attack, the blue "spike" below representing the Navy's support of the assault forces. This is also representative of the 3rd Maine Division insignia. That division made the initial landings on Guam in 1944. The red area of the shield ('Chief Embattled') alludes to an area under triphibious attack and also represents the three separate landings made in 1944. The colors blue and gold are those of the Navy. Scarlet and gold are those of the Marines, and also represent Spain, the nation that discovered Guam. The winged grenade of the crest refers to the Marines and is set on crossed anchors representing the Navy. The wings also depict the winged helmets of the Vikings, who were driven by an intense love of individual freedom, and were noted for their aggressive fighting spirit. The winged alligators symbolize the triphibious concept of assault, and also represent the spirit of the amphibious force. The crossed palm fronds symbolize victory and also allude to Guam's tropical location.
