Caption: Admiral Chester W. Nimitz CINCPAC flew from Hawaii to San Francisco to receive from Admiral E.J. King COMINCH the Distinguished Service Medal on 30 June 1942. Here on the quarterdeck of USS PENNSYLVANIA (BB-38) beneath gun turret #4, Admiral King reads the citation which noted Admiral Nimitz's meritorious service in his conduct of the U.S. Pacific Fleet operations against the Japanese in the Coral Sea and Midway Island battles in May and June 1942.
