NH 57631 Sperry Gyro-Stabilizer

Photo #: NH 57631 Sperry Gyro-Stabilizer
Title: Sperry Gyro-Stabilizer
Description: Installed in the engine room of USS Aramis (SP-418), 350 ton guardship and Admiral's barge in New York Harbor, circa 1920. The ship's diesel engines are partially visible in the right and left foreground, with the engine room workshop in the left background. The little control gyro shown immediately over the main gyro between the two tanks is the 'mind' of the equipment, and acts to start the precession of the main gyro before the roll of the ship takes effect. This photo shows the mounting of the gyro in the ship on the two gudgeon bearings at either side which allows the gyro to precess or turn in synchronism with the roll of the ship.
