Title: Commander John B. Montgomery, USN
Caption: A photograph of an original taken circa 1864 at which time he was Commanding Officer of the Washington Navy Yard. He served as Executive Officer aboard The USS CONSTITUTION in 1835; was promoted to Commander in 1939 and Commanded the PORTSMOUTH in Sloat's Squadron on the West Coast during the Mexican War. Commissioned a captain in 1853, he commanded the Pacific Squadron in 1861. He became Commodore (RET) in 1862 and Commanded The Charlestown (Mass-.) Navy Yard 1862 and 1863, and the Washington Navy Yard in 1863-64 -65. He was commissioned a Rear Admiral (RET.) in 1866 and died 25 March 1873, being buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, D.C.
