Caption: Young carrier pigeons being liberated on their first flight for training purposes. The picture was taken when the birds were one half mile from their loft, short tosses up to three miles are usually made by boat on the Potomac River, while the longer tosses are made from a motor truck. After they are tossed from the 35 mile liberation point via motor truck, they are shipped via motor truck, they are shipped via express to points of liberation at greater distances. Washington, D.C.
