Title: Figurehead of the U.S. ship of the line ALABAMA
Caption: This ship was subsequently named USS NEW HAMPSHIRE (first of the name). From an original pencil sketch on antiquated paper which contains the following: "Recd in letter received from Captain Creighton, dated 18 May 1827." ALABAMA was built by the government at the Navy Yard at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Her keel being laid in 1817. She remained on the stocks, unfinished and covered over, until after the beginning of the Civil War, when she was completed, on October 28, 1863, her name being changed to NEW HAMPSHIRE. Obsolete as a Ship-of-the-Line, the NEW HAMPSHIRE was fitted as a store and supply ship, carrying 15 guns, and finally placed in commission on May 11, 1864.
