Title: Iwo Jima Operation, February-March 1945
Description: After 24 days of the bitterest battle in the history of the Marine Corps the United States flag was raised officially March 14 over American Headquarters on Iwo Jima near Mt. Suribachi (background). This signifies the American occupation of Iwo though the battle is still raging. Prior to the ceremony, a proclamation issued by Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas (CinCPac/CinCPOA), was read, officially taking possession of the island. (Eds: This is an original print of photo transmitted by radio on March 15, 1945.) (quoted from the original caption released by CinCPac/CinCPOA on 15 March 1945). The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long. Official U.S. Marine Corps Photograph, from the collections of the Naval History and Heritage Command.
