Description: Last Stand - A die-hard Jap on Iwo Jima gets a blast of liquid flame. Fifth Marine Division riflemen surround the dug-out ready to pour covering fire into the opening. The flame-thrower, supported by covering rifle fire, has been a basic weapon in the cave to cave battle on the volcanic rock. (quoted from the original photo caption released 26 February 1945.) Photographed by Private First Class A.L. Farnum. The original photograph came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J.
