Description: Star-shells over Iwo Illuminating shells fired in from supporting warships light up the dark no-man's land between Jap front lines and the lines of the Third Marine Division on Iwo Jima. The star-shells were parachuted in from the sea every minute or two as a safeguard against enemy infiltration. Quoted from the original caption, released with this photograph on 2 March 1945. Photographed by Sergeant Robert Scheer, USMC. The original print came from Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's World War II history project working files. It was provided to Morison by E.J. Long.
