Caption: Insignia: USS ROBERT E. LEE (SSBN-601) This insignia was adopted in 1960. It features a Polaris Submarine carrying out her mission. The gauntlet in the foreground symbolizes the type worn by General Robert E. Lee. It is held palm up for two reasons: first, because this is an heraldic symbol for truth; and second, it represents the guidance furnished by the example of Robert E. Lee. The motto "Peace Through Deterrence" expresses the primary mission of the Polaris System.
