Caption: Lights a cigarette for CM3c Ralph Haynes, as he rests between planes at the air evacuation center at NAS Patuxent River, MD., circa 1945. He had arrived on the Naval air transport service's -Hospital Express from Oakland, California., in about 14 hours of flying. A small Nats plane later flew him to Washington, D.C for admission to the Bethesda Medical Center. Mrs. Whitley is wife of CDR. Ralph D. Whitley, USN -MC-, flight surgeon on the staff of com. Nats Atlantic Wing.
