USN 1153268 USS White Sands (ARD-20) and Trieste

The mother ship, the auxiliary repair dry dock White Sands (ARD-20), stands by as the bathyscaph Trieste operates independently. The Trieste is being prepared for a dive. These two units and the fleet ocean tug Apache (ATF-67, which tows the White Sands with the Trieste aboard, are called the Integral Operating Unit (IOU).
